Document preparation with LaTeX

The preferred document preparation method in CVSSP is LaTeX. Our installation is LaTeX2e, the 2nd Edition of LaTeX; however it will still handle old-style LaTeX files.

What you can create with LaTeX

There are several forms of output for LaTeX:

• You can generate pdf files directly (including hyperlinks), using pdflatex (see brief introduction). This is can also be used to generate presentations.
• The old way was to use the latex command to generate a dvi file (viewable with xdvi), which can then be converted to a PostScript or pdf document for printing etc. Still works.
• You can generate html pages directly, using latex2html. (Where is the up-to-date doc?)
• latex2rtf will generate rtf files compatible with M$ Word.

Editors for LaTeX

• For traditionalists, xemacs provides some sort of integrated environment for LaTeX. gedit is popular.
• For those who like M$ Word, kile provides a sophisticated mouse-driven environment.
