Warning: You may find the odd link that only exist on
Solaris machines. So if the link is broken, run Netscape on a
Solaris machine.
- AVS, an
interactive tool which also does image processing, and can be
used to implement shared-memory multiprocessing schemes.
- gnuplot,
a command-line-driven interactive function-plotting utility.
See man
gnuplot, the users'
guide and the full reference
manual. Among other options, gnuplot can generate output
for direct inclusion in LaTeX files.

Khoros Version 2, a comprehensive signal-processing,
image-processing and visualisation package.
- PGPLOT , a set
of Fortran library routines for 2D and 3D graphics; see also setup instructions.

- ggobi
- actually an n-D visualsation tool.

Xmgf - a home-grown visualisation tool for 2D & 3D geometrical
features over a grey-scale image. Now seems to have a life of its own
out there on the web.
- xmaple - really a
symbolic algebra manipulation package, but has a useful 3D/4D
graphics interface.
- xv - an image display and
manipulation tool (link currently only works on some machines,
e.g. smaug)
- ImageMagick - a whole
collection of useful image viewing and manipulation tools,
including reading and writing of Postscript files and MPEG
motion sequences, and file format conversion.
- gimp - another
image and manipulation display tool, with paintbox.

xgf - a home-grown tool that displays various types of
geometric feature over a grey-scale image.
- xpaint - a paint-box tool
- pbmplus - a simple image file
format and set of associated programs.
- xmgrace (+ local user guide, tutorial and FAQs): grace is a set of graphics
visualisation tools for exploratory data analysis. The data files for
the tutorial examples are stored here.
- mplayer:
currently the best Linux (and other platforms) video player, in terms of
the number of formats it can handle. Use
gmplayer to get
the GUI. Comprehensive man pages available.

mencoder: from the same package as mplayer. Encodes a huge
range of video formats. A few usage hints,
thanks to Fei Yan with additions by Bill Xmas.
- DV video tools for grabbing
from DV tapes and manipulating DV files
- ImageMagick
- see aboe - converts sequences too (a bit).
- mpeg_play
- plays mpeg-1 encoded bitstreams (see man
page)
- VNC - for grabbing screen
shots as a movie
- xanim
- multiformat animation/video/audio viewer (see man page). If the
web page claims support for compression formats that we do
not have, ask the
System Manager for a new release.
- VPlay
(see also "
VPlay -help") - a player based on the RAVL
video I/O classes. Will therefore play any sequence that these
classes can process.
- conv (see "
conv -help") - Converts between any file formats that RAVL understands, including some image and video formats. Type "conv -lf" to get a complete list of formats.
- xv -wait - Use
xv with
"-wait" option to display sequence of images.
- MPEG-4 MoMuSys software is available locally.
- seqview -
to view several tracks simultaneously and easily navigate
through pgm sequence data
- tmndec
- H.263 decoder/player (currently
/vol/vssp/Coding/Bin.sun4/tmndec2) + README
- mpeg2encode / mpeg2decode - encodes /
decodes MPEG-1 and -2 audiovisual streams. This is the MPEG player used
in ImageMagic above. On the whole it has been superseded by
mencoder
- Also try various commands beginning "play....", e.g. plaympeg
These have been generated within the CVSSP. Look for sources
for these tools under either amma, gama or /vol/vssp/src.
