OpenOffice
This is an alternative to the Microsoft Office tools, now supported by Sun
Microsystems. It claims to be able to read and write Microsoft Office format
files, and to provide essentially the same functionality as Office. It runs
on a variety of platforms, including Linux and Windows; in CVSSP it is
available under Linux. Under Solaris, its predecessor, StarOffice is
available instead.
To use either Openoffice or StarOffice, type:
soffice
or
soffice <filename>
The first time you run it, it will ask you to go through a setup procedure.
Just agree to all the options it suggests. If you encounter the form for
your personal details, you do not seem to need to actually fill it out - just
leave it as it is (maybe put in your name?).
