At the time of writing, ispell checks for English spelling on all architectures. On the other hand, aspell (where available) seems to check for American spelling.
Within xemacs:The spelling checker within xemacs is basically ispell. However xemacs is context-sensitive, and so for example when it processes a LaTeX file, it uses the appropriate ispell option.
