Real
player: general
purpose audio and video player. Supports RealAudio, RealVideo 10, MP3,
WAV, Ogg Vorbis and Theora, H263, AAC and more.
- Gnome
CD/DVD
creator: Used to create CDs and DVDs.
- K3b:
used

Cds,data CDs, DVDs and for copying CDs (more

- CD Database
Server: CD Database preference tool enables you to
configure a CD database that your system can query. A CD database
contains information about CDs, such as the name of the artist, the
title, and the track list. When an application plays a CD, the
application can query the CD database about the CD, then display the
information.
Settings
for CD Database:
- Send
no info:Select
this option if you do not want to send any
information to the CD database server.
- Send
real info:Select
this option to send your name and hostname
information to the CD database server.
- Send
other info:Select
this option to send another name and hostname to
the CD database server. Enter the name in the Name field. Enter the
hostname in the Hostname field.
- FreeDB
round
robin server:FreeDB is a CD database. The FreeDB round
robin server is a load-sharing configuration of FreeDB servers. Select
this option to access the FreeDB CD database from this server.
- Other
FreeDB
server:Select this option to access the FreeDB CD database
from another server. Select the server that you require from the server
table.
- Update
server
list:Click on this button to update the list of available
FreeDB servers in the server table.
- Other
server:Select
this option to use another CD database. Enter the
name of the server on which the database resides in the Hostname field.
Enter the port number on which you can access the database in the Port
field.
- Grip:
a
CD-player and CD-ripper which provides an easy transformation
of other audio formats into MP3s (more info) .
- KAudioCreator:
a front-end
tool for ripping audio CDs and encoding the
wav files using encoder.

- Coriander:
A GUI
used
to
control a digital camera through firewire.
gAlan(graphical
Audio
language):
audio processing tool to build
synthesisers, effects chains, mixers, sequencers, drum-machines etc. in
a modular fashion by linking together icons representing primitive
audio-processing components (more
info)
- Kino
: a
non-linear DV
editor for GNU/Linux. It features
integration with IEEE-1394 for capture, VTR control, and recording back
to the camera. It captures video to disk in Raw DV and AVI format, in
both type-1 DV and type-2 DV (separate audio stream) encodings (more info)
- MainActor:a
software
program for video editing (more info)
Aeolus:
a
synthesised pipe organ sound player (more
info).
ASeqView:
an ALSA sequencer
user-client which works as event viewer. It
visualises received events, e.g. note-on/off, controls, pitch wheels,
using bar graphs, as often seen in many sequencer programs.
Ecamegapedal:
a real-time
effect processor software with a graphical
user interface for controlling the effect parameters (more info).
GNU Solfege:
computer
program written to help in ear training.It can be
useful when practising the simple and mechanical exercises (more info).

Jaaa
(JACK
and ALSA Audio
Analyser): an audio signal generator and spectrum
analyser designed to make accurate
measurements.
- JACK Rack:
adds effects to
the JACK low latency audio API. LADSPA(Linux
Audio Developer's Simple Plug-in API) effects plug-ins can be used
and can be controlled using the ALSA sequencer.
- AConnect:is
a utility to connect and disconnect two existing ports on ALSA
sequencer system. The ports with the arbitrary subscription permission
can be connected to any (MIDI) device ports using aconnect.

Connection
Management options:
-d, --disconnect Disconnect
the given subscription.
-e, --exclusive
Connect ports with exclusive mode.
Both sender and receiver ports can be no longer connected by any other
ports.
-r, --real
queue Convert time-stamps of
event packets to the current value of the given real-time
queue. This is option is, however, not so useful, since the
receiver
port must use (not necessarily own) the
specified queue.
-t, --tick
queue Like -r option, but
time-stamps are converted to the current value of the given tick
queue.
Options to list ports:
-i,
--input List existing input (readable) ports.
This option is exclusive to -o.
-o, --output
List existing output (writable) ports. This
option is exclusive to -i.
-l, --list
List the current connection status. The
connected and connect- ing ports from/to each port are listed together.
The suffix flag [ex] means the connection is
exclusive.
The
suffix flag [real:#]
and [tick:#] mean the connection
includes real-time and tick conversion on the listed queue,
respectively.
Remove all connections option:
-x, --removeall
Remove all exported connections.
KAConnect:
displays the readable and writable ports of the ALSA sequencer system.
Connections between those ports can be subscribed by highlighting one
port in the list of readable ports and one port in the list of writable
ports and then mouse-clicking on "connect". Disconnecting works the
same
way, but with mouse-click on "disconnect". The height of the listboxes
can be configured using the --height option. It updates the
lists when ALSA clients,which implement readable/writable ports, are
started or terminated. The display of subscribed connections is also
updated whenever a new client is started or a new started or a new
subscription is performed.
KWaveview: real time scope and spectrum analyser.KWaveView
captures sound from "Line In" or "Mic In" and displays the sound waves
in the time domain and Fourier domain. The sound data can be displayed
in the temporal as well as the Fourier domain. Both the scope and the
spectrum analyser can display two channels simultaneously, which can be
selected from your input channels. Frequency areas can be enlarged in
the spectrum view. The lower frequency boundary is determined by
clicking the left mouse button in the spectrum view. Right clicking in
the spectrum view determines the higher frequency boundary. Toggling
between full frequency view and enlarged view is done by clicking the
middle mouse button in the spectrum view. When moving the mouse in the
spectrum, the frequency at the mouse cursor is displayed. For this
feature to work also exactly in the enlarged view, please make sure,
not to change the number of frames and the window size after you
determined the boundaries for the enlargement. Otherwise you'll get
roundoff errors due to the conversion between mouse coordinates
and frequency channels.
Ladcca
client: LADCCA stands for Linux
Audio Developer’s
Configuration and Connection API. It is a session management system for
audio applications on GNU/Linux.

Meter
Bridge: supports
a number of different types of meter, rendered using the SDL library

QJackConnect:
a
QT based patchbay for the JACK Audio Connection Kit. For more

QJackCtl:
offers
a user interface for controlling the JACK sound server
daemon. At the same time it figures as a JACK patch bay and monitoring
tool.

a real time synthesizer. More

Recording:
- Mic. in:
When setting up a microphone for recording, you should check it is
plugged into the microphone input on the soundcard
(third socket from the end, as opposed to the line in, which is for
signals that have already been pre-amplified).
Next, use the mixer to check that the
recording box is checked
under
"Mic" and that the gains for "Vol" and "IGain"
are both non-zero (it's a good idea to turn them full on).
- Line in:
Signals that have been pre-amplified, such as those from the output of
a soundcard or the Sony mixing desk, should be fed into the line
input on the soundcard
(second from the end, after digital output).
With the mixer you should check that the recording box is
checked under
"Line" and that the gains for "Vol" and "IGain" set.
- rec: a
linux command-line utility for capturing the soundcard input from a mic
or a line into a standard format file,
e.g., rec
-r48000 -sl -c1
file.wav
to produce a mono wave file of 16-bit integer samples at
48 kHz.

- KRec: a sound recorder utility.
Type krec --help for more information.
- KRecord: is
a sound
recorder. It can just record and
playback wav-files. Can handle multiple files, you
can drop files (from the file manager) to it, it can handle large
sound files without problems. Has a input level display.
- Kvdr: Virtual video recorder. For
more information, click here.
qaRecord:
a simple multi threaded
stereo recording tool. It can record both 16 bit and 32 bit WAVs. By
using a large ring buffer for the captured data, buffer overruns are
avoided. QARecord can also be used as JACK client.
- Recording
level monitor: monitors
the recording level.

Audacity:
a utility to
record and edit audio. It allows recording
live audio through a microphone or mixer up to 96 kHz 32-bit
resolution, importing sound files, editing, effects, etc.. Supports
various audio formats for import/export: WAV, AIFF, AU, Ogg Vorbis
files, mp3. Comes with a load of effects and synthesis plug-ins.
Plug-ins can be written using the linux LADSPA plugin format, and it is
possible to load VST plugins with the optional VST Enabler. New effects
can be written with the built-in Nyquist programming language.

- Grip:
provides an easy transformation
of other audio formats into MP3s (more info) .
Hydrogen:
a simple
real-time Drum machine/sequencer. It features a graphical user
interface based on Qt 3, a sample-based audio engine, OSS/Jack/Export
to disk audio drivers, ALSA MIDI input, ability to import/export
XML-based song files, 64 ticks per pattern, 16 voices with volume,
mute, solo, and pan capabilities, and import of samples in wave, au,
and aiff format.

Muse:
MusE is a MIDI/Audio sequencer with recording and editing
capabilities. More
information can be found here.
NoteEdit: Noteedit
is an editor for music notation that
supports an unlimited
number of staffs and up to 9 voices per staff. You can use it to create
sheets of notes. You can import and export into many formats like midi,
musicxml and lilypond.
RTSynth: a
midi
event triggered real time synthesizer for
Linux. More information can be found here.
RTSynth-jack: Midi event triggered
realtime software synthesizer with support for jack.
seq24: Seq24
is a
real-time midi sequencer. It was created to
provide a very simple interface for editing and playing MIDI 'loops.'
tkeca:
Tkeca is a TCL/TK frontend for Kai Vehmanen's Ecasound.
- Rosegarden:
Rosegarden is a professional audio and MIDI sequencer, score editor,
and general-purpose music composition and editing environment.
alsamixer GUI: alsamixer
is an ncurses mixer program for use with the ALSA
soundcard drivers. It supports multiple soundcards with multiple
devices.
Invoke by typing alsamixer
[options] , where
options could be
-h, -help
-c <card number
or idenfication> Select the
soundcard to use, if you have more than one. Cards are numbered from 0
(the default).
-D <device
identification> Select the mixer device
to control.
-g <toggle color
settings> Toggle the using of
colours.
-s <minimise
mixer window> Minimise the mixer
window.
Alsamixer recognises the
following keyboard commands to control the
soundcard.
- General Controls : The Left
and right arrow keys are used to select the channel (or
device,
depending on your preferred terminology). You can also use n
("next") and p ("previous"). The UpDown Arrows
control the volume for the currently selected device. You can also use +
or - for the same purpose. Both the left and right signals are
affected. For independent left and right control, see below. The B
or = key adjusts the balance of volumes on left and right chan-
using Insert (or ;) and Delete (or ')
respectively. L re-draws the screen.
- Quick Volume Changes:
PageUp
increases volume by 5, PageDown
decreases volume by 5 and End sets volume to 0. You can
also control left & right levels for the current channel
independently, as follows:
[Q
| W | E ] -- turn UP [ left
| both | right ]
[Z
| X | C ] -- turn DOWN [
left | both | right ]
If the
currently selected mixer channel is not a stereo channel, then all UP
keys will work like W, and all DOWN keys
will work like X.
- Exiting: Quit
the program with ALT Q, or by hitting ESC.
Please note that you might need to hit ESC twice on some
terminals since it's regarded as a prefix key.
Alsamixer GUI is a graphical user
interface which provides the same
functionality as alsamixer.
Envy24control: Envy24control
is a graphical utility for controlling cards based on the envy24 or ice1712
chipset, e.g., the Midiman Delta series and the Terratec EWS and EWX
series. It is supplied as part of the alsa-tools
package. The utility allows control of the digital mixer, channel gains
and other hardware settings, as well as displaying a level meter for
each input and output channel.

gamix: a
graphical front-end (using the GTK+ toolkit)
for controlling sound volume.
This program interfaces with the ALSA native mixer device.
HDSPMixer:
is
the Linux equivalent of the Totalmix application from RME. It is a tool
to control the advanced routing features of the RME Hammerfall DSP
soundcard series.
RME digicontrol: a utility of
controlling RME sound card.
- Volume control: a utility to adjust
volume.
- Volume monitor: a volume
meter.
- SFS( Speech Filing System): a speech analysis utility which is
currently maintained for windows and is available on Zig. Click here for more

- Praat: a speech analysis and
synthesis tool. A beginners guide can be found here. To invoke, just type praat
in
your terminal.
- HTK: Hidden
Markov Model toolkit is a speech recognition software developed at
Cambridge University. HTK

- SEGVit: Segmental viterbi decoder. Please contact

- Matlab: a versatile numerical calculation and
visualisation utility, available on all Linux.Unix workstations. More
details can be found here.
- Pure Data (pd) : a real-time
graphical programming environment for audio, video, and
graphical processing. Pd can be used for simultaneous real-time computer
animation and computer audio.

- Edinburgh Speech Tools: The
Edinburgh Speech Tools Library is a collection of C++ class,
functions and related programs for manipulating the sorts of
objects used in speech processing. It includes support for reading
and writing waveforms, parameter files (LPC, Ceptra, F0) in various
formats and converting between them. It also includes support for
linguistic type objects and support for various label files and
ngrams (with smoothing). Click here for manual.
- CoolEdit Pro:
a utility for recording, playing and editing audio waveform files,
which is currently only installed on the Vampire project's laptop.
